Disorders Treated
Voice
BVI is a full-service laryngology practice. Areas of particular focus and experience include:
- Vocal fold surface disorders such as nodules, polyps, cysts, vascular abnormalities, glottic sulcus, and both pre-cancerous and cancerous growths
- Spasmodic dysphonia, caused by laryngeal dystonia
- vocal fold paralysis
- RRP (Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis in adults, caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV)
- Lesions amenable to laser treatment (in office and/or operating room)–including CO2, pulsed-KTP, and Thulium
- Functional and non-organic voice disorders
Swallowing
We focus primarily on disorders of oropharyngeal (mouth and throat) swallowing difficulties. Our primary means of evaluation are the video-endoscopic and video-fluoroscopic swallowing studies. Disorders treated:
- Coordination difficulties related to aging, and neurological disease
- Cricopharyngeus dysfunction, with or without
- Zenker’s diverticulum
Airway
Disorders we treat are in the upper airway–including scarring or inflammatory lesions at the level of the vocal folds down to the upper trachea (windpipe). Specific disorders:
- Webbing or scarring between the vocal folds
- Scarring below the vocal folds due to breathing tube injury
- Inflammatory subglottic and tracheal stenosis thought to be an incomplete expression of Wegener’s granulomatosis
- Functional and in particular non-organic breathing dysfunction, sometimes called vocal fold dysfunction
