Refers to any malignant growth or tumor caused by abnormal and uncontrolled cell division. The hallmarks of cancer (the majority of those in the head and neck may also be called [intlink id=”91″ type=”post”]carcinoma[/intlink] are its (eventual) ability to invade neighboring tissue and/or to spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system or the bloodstream. Early cancers may have done neither, remaining localized to the tissue of origin.
