Lori L. Sonnenberg, M.M. (voice), M.A., CCC-SLP

Lori L. Sonnenberg is a Speech-Language Pathologist and Singing Voice Specialist. In her work she combines a passion for treating injured voices with extensive experience as a singer and voice teacher.

A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Ms. Sonnenberg is a lyric-coloratura soprano. She earned a B.M. in Vocal Performance from Centenary College of Louisiana, cum laude, an M.M. in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from Pennsylvania State University, and an M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.

Ms. Sonnenberg’s professional performance experience includes solo performances with the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra as well as other regional orchestras. She was a seven-time first-place winner in the Southern Region National Association of Singing (NATS) Competition and a finalist in the Eastern Region NATSAA auditions in March 2000. She won the Philharmonic Concerto Competition at both Penn State (1998) and Centenary College (1996). Her opera credits include Gretel in Humperdinck’s Hansel und Gretel, Susanna in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Miss Pinkerton in Menotti’s The Old Maid and the Thief, and Dido in the 1999 world premiere of Bruce Trinkley’s The Golden Apple at the National Opera Association Convention. Recent performances include soprano soloist for John Rutter’s Magnificat.

As a speech pathologist, Ms. Sonnenberg devotes her time exclusively to the evaluation and treatment of voice disorders, including not only a large caseload of singers and other voice professionals, but also neurological, degenerative and non-organic voice disorders.

Ms. Sonnenberg’s current research interest is to compare the voice-related quality of life of voice patients before and after treatment, specifically singers who have undergone vocal fold microsurgery for otherwise irreversible lesions.

Ms. Sonnenberg is a member of the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) holding the Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC-SLP). She is also a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), the Chicago NATS Chapter, and is serving her second term as Vice-President of the Chicago Singing Teachers’ Guild (CSTG).
